Got you, didn’t I? Texas is playing incredible basketball right now on the backs of their star guards Tyrese Hunter and Marcus Carr. Their only true test was against Gonzaga, and they passed with flying colors, beating them by 19. They’ve taken care of the cupcake games on their schedule with ease (cough, cough, Houston) and now their ‘real’ season starts. Their next two games against 10 Creighton and 16 Illinois are going to determine whether they’re a contender or pretender. With the way they’re playing right now, I’ll vote contender.
These Guys Do Everything Together!
Duke and North Carolina are forever mentioned among the greats when discussing college basketball, and usually when you’re talking about the two schools, one of them has just suffered a loss in the historic Duke-UNC rivalry. Yesterday, they BOTH lost. Duke got their doors blown off by Purdue, as Zach Edey established himself as the next great big out of the Purdue Big Man Factory. Seriously, where are they finding these guys?
That’s now two losses on the season for Duke, albeit to tough opponents, but there are some serious question marks around this program. Kansas and Purdue are the caliber of teams they’d have to face in March, and while they might just be getting the losses out of the way early (smart strategy imho), those losses are concerning. I don’t think Coach K is the type of guy to make everything about himself and un-retire, but he has to be thinking about it, right?
The boys from Chapel Hill had definitively the best game of the young season yesterday. FOUR overtimes against a tough Alabama squad, with plenty of missed shots in the overtime periods.
I don’t view this as a mark on the Tar Heels’ season so far, you can chalk that up to pure college basketball chaos. Nobody thought this team was going undefeated, and a quadruple-overtime loss against a very solid Alabama team is nothing to hang your head about. Either way, UNC technically ‘won’ against Duke yesterday. Would you rather get blown out by Purdue or lose in 4 overtimes? Me too.
