How Did the NFL Get Started?

Though these 14 teams were the foundation of the NFL as we know it today, only two teams remain: the Cardinals (who moved to St. Louis and then finally settled again in Arizona) and the Decatur Staleys who moved to Chicago and renamed themselves the Bears.
The Canton Bulldogs were one of the most dominant NFL teams in the early 1900s. They boasted famous players such as Olympic Gold Medalist and hailed football hero, Jim Thorpe. The Bulldogs won back-to-back NFL championship game titles in 1922 and 1923. To this day, the Canton Bulldogs still hold the NFL record for most consecutive team wins, with 25 straight. The team’s success was due in part to their strong defense, which was anchored by Thorpe himself. In addition, the team had a number of talented offensive players, including future Hall of Famer Red Grange.
Though the league initially consisted of just 14 teams, it soon expanded. Today, the NFL is made up of 32 teams spread across the United States.
How Does the NFL Work Today?

The AFC
The AFC was originally founded in 1970 as a merger between the NFL’s two existing conferences, the American Football League (AFL) and the National Football League.
The AFC is made up of sixteen teams, divided into four divisions: North, South, East, and West. The AFC has won twenty-seven Super Bowls, more than any other conference. The New England Patriots have won the most Super Bowls of any team in the AFC, with six. The AFC is also home to some of the NFL’s most historic rivalries, including the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens.
